hit upon a wall

For a while I was posting pages from my sketchbook on a regular basis. Not so much lately.

My drawing time has been devoted to getting the next issue of The Natural World finished in time for MoCCA in early April. Then it’s off to the Stumptown show in Portland later in the month. Ah, the jet-set life of a self-publishing cartoonist! It’s not bad at all actually.

So there won’t be many posts here for at least another month. It’s not due to dwindling enthusiasm for the endeavor; I just ran out of pages to post! If you enjoy the sketchbook drawings rest assured I will be cranking up the old Sketchamatic again once I return from the comics show circuit.

I’m also thinking of posting all of The Natural World online, but more on that in the future maybe.

See you soon!

oh golly, this is nice

ignatzSurprise, surprise, I found out yesterday after Melanie and I missed a connecting flight in Salt Lake City that over the weekend I won an Ignatz for “Outstanding Story” for a comic that I contributed to the Papercutter anthology published by Tugboat Press!

I was completely and totally floored by the news considering all the other deserving talent also nominated for the award.

Thanks to Greg Means for accepting the award in my absence, and thanks again to Greg for inviting me to contribute to Papercutter! And thanks whoever you are for voting for me. It’s nice to know you’re out there.

inna book & onna blog

There is a new book on the horizon.

Abstract Comics: The Anthology is edited by Andrei Molotiu and published by Fantagraphics Books. I am honored to be included in it since I’m in the company of quite a few people who make comics that I enjoy, such as John Hankiewicz, Warren Craighead, and Jason Overby. Not to mention R. Crumb and Gary Panter too!

There will be advance copies available for browsing at the MoCCA comics festival. I’m not sure when the release date is. I should know, but I don’t. Sometime this summer.

What you can check out right now is the blog that has been estabished to discuss all things abstract and sequential: Abstract Comics: The Blog. The blog is brand new, less than a week old, and already there are some really interesting comics posted there. I know I’m not exactly objective, but if you have somehow found your way here I’m sure you’ll want to visit over there too. Go now while the blog is new and the enthusiasm is high.

I Saw You…: Comics Inspired by Real-Life Missed Connections

From the publisher (Three Rivers Press): This anthology of comics inspired by real-life missed connection ads posted on Craigslist and in local papers around the country will tug at your heartstrings and make you think. Lonely hearts, romantics, and even cynics pore over missed connection ads in search of love, to gawk and giggle, or out of curiosity. These posted stranger sightings and chance encounters lay bare the truths and oddities of real-life loneliness and attractions and bring out the voyeur in the best of us. I Saw You takes this phenomenon and makes it even better.

Edited by Julia Wertz, the book also includes comics by Peter Bagge, Jesse Reklaw, Tom Hart, Sam Henderson, Laura Park, Emily Flake, Keith Knight, Janelle Hessig, Gabrielle Bell, Aaron Renier, Austin English, Corinne Mucha, Jeffrey Brown, Alec Longstreth, Minty Lewis, Joey Sayers, David Malki, Kazimir Strzepek, Ken Dahl, Shaenon Garrity, Rodd Perry, Abby Denson, Damien Jay, Sarah Glidden, and dozens more.

Here’s a little sample…

Partyka

I have been invited to be the guest artist on the Partyka website for the month of December.

Partyka is a comics collective that produces some lovingly made books. I have contributed some drawings and sketches that have gone into the making of some upcoming and recent comics. Their archive of guest artists is outstanding. Cheggit out!
